floral wedding centerpiece Floral Wedding Centerpiece Project

This floral wedding centerpiece is made of easy-to-grow garden flowers that can also be found at any florist shop. It is assembled as a fresh floral centerpiece; when left unwatered, it becomes a long-lasting dried floral for your wall.

Supplies For the Floral Wedding Centerpiece

* Gypsophila (baby’s breath)

* Amaranthus

* Heather

* Hydrangea

* Larkspur

* Lemon leaves

* Delphinium

* Bear grass

* Glass hurricane candle shade

* 3 candles with holders

(small enough to fit in hurricane shade)

* 4 large trays with Oasis floral foam

* Floral adhesive

* 24-gauge floral wire

* Floral picks

* Cling wrap

* Design Master Color Tool in Basil

* Pencil

* 1/2″ foam board

* Craft snips

* Awl

* Hot glue gun, glue sticks

* Utility knife

* Cutting board

Note: All floral materials should be freshly cut and kept in water until ready for assembly. While the floral arrangement is drying, it will shrink. Purchase extra baby’s breath and hydrangea (these shrink the most), and allow them to dry in a vase. Fill in your arrangement with these later to make up for shrinkage. If you prefer other flowers, check with your florist to make sure they are appropriate for this technique.

Floral Wedding Centerpiece Instructions

Step I: Preparing the Base

1. To form base, place four trays of Oasis foam so they form an open square, with an end butted against a side, and so on. Secure the trays together with strips of floral adhesive at each joint (see photo below).   Secure trays together in an open square with floral adhesive.

2. To prepare backing for hanging arrangement when it is dry, lay base on foam board and trace inside and outside with pencil. Remove base and cut out frame shape with utility knife, removing inside (see photo below). To give dried arrangement a more finished appearance, spray front, back, and sides of foam board with Basil Design Master. Let paint dry. Set aside until arrangement has dried.

Cut frame shape from foam board using a utility knife.

3. Moisten foam under running water or submerge in water. Let excess water drip from the foam and then replace foam in the trays.

4. To add stability to floral base and to give stems a better surface through which to be attached, tightly wrap several layers of cling wrap around square foam base, coming up through the center and around to the outside (see photo below). Continue wrapping several layers, covering the foam surface and binding the corners of the square together. This will also help the arrangement stay fresh longer.

Step II: Adding the Fresh Wedding Florals to the Centerpiece

Note: The variety of florals chosen for this arrangement balance each other nicely. When dried, they have different levels of fragility. By placing the sturdiest florals on the outside and the most frail on the inside, the piece has a better chance of surviving as a dried arrangement for many seasons without losing excessive blossoms.

1. Begin by placing cut branches of lemon leaves in a layer around the base of the foam. The stems of the lemon leaves are rather stiff, so they should go through the cling wrap easily. If not, use the awl to poke a hole through the cling wrap and then place stem (see photo below).

2. The next layer is heather. Again, use awl to make hole in cling wrap prior to placing stem.

3. Layer in clusters of delphinium, amaranthus, and larkspur, concentrating placement in the corners.

4. Line center of arrangement with the hydrangea. Hydrangea is delicate, so carefully cut it into smaller clusters and wrap stems with floral wire to strengthen them so they can be tucked securely around the inner edge of the arrangement.

5. Fill in around wreath with baby’s breath, staying close to the inner edge. As with hydrangea, wrap with floral wire, if necessary, for added strength.

6. For each corner of the arrangement, make clusters of six or seven blades of bear grass. Lay a floral pick along the base of each cluster, with sharp end pointing downward. Wrap pick and base of cluster with pick’s floral wire and insert one cluster into each corner. Place cluster deep enough to hide pick.

7. When using as a centerpiece, lay arrangement on table and center candles in holders inside the square. Place hurricane shade carefully over candles.
After the Wedding Floral Arrangement Dries Up

1. The fresh arrangement will last for a week to 10 days if Oasis is kept moistened. As it dries, bear grass will curl and flowers will shrink. Use hot glue to secure loose foliage and add extra dried flowers to fill in where holes from shrinkage is obvious (see photo below).

flower arranging instructions e Floral Wedding Centerpiece Project

Add extra dried flowers to fill in where shrinkage is obvious.

2. Before attaching the dried arrangement to the backing, attach a wire hanger to the backing so the arrangement can hang on the wall. In one corner, use an awl to poke two holes about 4″ apart, 3″ down from point and 1″ in from each side edge. Spacing should keep wire from tearing foam board. Thread wire through foam board, pull taut against foam board, and hot glue wires in holes to secure (see photo below). Twist ends of wires together to make hanger.

Punch holes in foam board and thread with wire to make hanger.

3. For backing, use hot glue to attach foam board frame to back of tray base. Secure frame to arrangement with a few wrappings of floral wire. As you wrap, feed wire through base of flowers and come out the other side. Protect wall from wires by trimming twisted ends short and keeping them at the sides of the arrangement.

Christmas Wedding Ideas

Saturday, October 9th, 2010

It may sound like a slightly corny idea, but Christmas themed weddings can be magnificent. Instead of appearing tacky, you can design your wedding to be stylish, elegant and simple. Capture the spirit of Christmas with these simple hints and tips …

Wedding Attire:

  • Your dress does not necessarily have to make you look like Mrs. Claus unless you would like it too of course! A long velvet cape would be quite a subtle addition to a traditional dress, and you could use a decorated muff, rather than a bouquet.
  • Traditional Christmas fabrics include taffeta and plaid, so keep this in mind when you are selecting your dress.

Colors:

  • Use red, white and forest green, but also consider gold, silver and burgundy.

Flowers:

  • Fire and ice roses are white with red-tipped petals. These would work perfectly for a Christmas themed wedding.
  • Instead of flowers you could use sprigs of holly, ivy and pine.
  • Otherwise, consider using poinsettias and baby’s breath in your flower arrangements.

Decorations:

  • Install Christmas trees with tiny white fairy lights, or simply string up the lights in bushes around the church or chapel.
  • Greenery roping looks fantastic twisted around furniture, and is relatively cheap to buy.
  • Buy some beautiful red potted poinsettias to decorate the altar with.
  • Candles are always good, but are particularly effective at this time of year.
  • Don’t forget, if you are getting married in a church then it may well already be decorated. This has really great implications if you are a little short on money.

Music:

  • Obviously you could ask the organist to play church hymns.
  • Otherwise, a choral group would be fantastic, particularly if they are dressed in Dickens-esque Edwardian or Victorian clothing.
  • A harpist or a string quartet would be another great alternative too.
  • You could even incorporate hand bells … but not as you walk down the aisle, as this will probably detract people’s attention from you!

Transportation:

  • If you are lucky enough to live somewhere which is guaranteed snow, why not arrive on a horse drawn sleigh?!
  • Otherwise, you could play on the Cinderella ball theme, and arrive in beautiful a horse drawn carriage. You could decorate the carriage to co-ordinate with your dress and the decorations inside the church or chapel too.

Reception Refreshments:

  • For drinks you could serve eggnog or mulled wine. Don’t forget how nice cinnamon sticks smell!
  • Your wedding cake could be decorated with tiny Christmas ornaments or holly. (But make sure that you don’t use poinsettias, as a relatively large number of people are allergic to their secretions).

Reception Games:

  • Why not hold a special ‘singles dance’ where each person is provided with mistletoe headdress wreaths. This will add a fun element to the proceedings, and will help your guests to mingle with one another. And you never know, you might be at their weddings next!

rosepetals Pretty in Pink Wedding Centerpiece

Pretty in Pink! This centerpiece would be very appropriate for a spring or summer wedding, with its rose petals and soft color. You can easily create a centerpiece like this using fresh rose petals, but we’ll let you in on a little secret – the ones used here are faux! Made out of acetate, a silk-like material, who would know they aren’t the real thing?

Creating this Wedding Centerpiece is Easy! Here’s How:

1. Start by selecting an attractive clear glass container for the centerpiece. Here, an elevated bowel on a glass pedestal was used, but feel free to use a more standard style of bowl for equally lovely effects.

2. Fill the container with fresh water.

3. Select your floating candles. For our centerpiece, square floaters from Candles Just Online Pretty in Pink Wedding Centerpiece , were chosen because the atypical sqaure shape adds terrific visual interest to the overall design. You can mimic this look entirely if you use sqaure floaters in your design, or you could select another style of floating candle to create your own look. We recommend Candles Just Online Pretty in Pink Wedding Centerpiece for a great selection of styles of floating candles.

4. Place the floating candles in the water. To mimic the look in the photo, crowd the candles in the container – for this particular container, four candles was about all it could hold, and we crammed them in! If you prefer a different look, use fewer candles.

5. Now its time to add the Pièce de Résistance – the rose petals, also available from Candles Just Online Pretty in Pink Wedding Centerpiece . It’s the rose petals that really cap off the look in this particular centerpiece design and give it that super-romantic, super-soft visual effect. Just place the petals on water and around the candles, and be sure to also sprinkle them on the table, around the centerpiece to finish that wonderful setting!

Make the Pedestal Bowl (Optional)

The exact bowl shown in the photo is not available for purchase anywhere that we know of, but any type of clear glass bowl can be used for your centerpiece – it does not have to be a raised bowl – so simply substitute a different style of bowl to create a look that is all your own and truly unique.

However, you can create a bowl that looks very similar to this for yourself by gluing the bottom of a clear glass bowl to an overturned drinking glass (clear). Use a hot glue gun, or ask your local craft store for a clear adhesive suitable for gluing glass.

See how easy it was to pull the whole look together?

Top Six Wedding Dress Trends for 2009/2010

Friday, October 1st, 2010

Our current wedding fashion trends feel really diverse – you can have a wedding gown style based on pretty much any era of fashion and still be extremely fashionable.

So what’s in store for this year and next?  What wedding dress styles are hot, or going to become hot?  Some leading wedding gown designers were asked that same question, and the following are what they predicted.

1. Sexy Slinky Silhouettes

If you’ve got a fab figure (or fantastic suction underwear!), now is the time to do a victory dance – sexy, figure-hugging wedding dress silhouettes will be hot for the next couple of seasons.

2. Ballgown Styles

For those who loved the wildly ridiculous yet fabulous gowns in Gone with the Wind (*blush*), and for many of us who want to disguise our thighs, ballgown style wedding gowns are back. Fabulous! Ballgown wedding dresses have many rather wonderful upsides, including squishing you into the shape you desire, giving you fabulous cleavage, and being impossible to remove on your own icon wink Top Six Wedding Dress Trends for 2009/2010 .

3. Fifties style wedding gowns

This is the one I’m really very pleased about – I always have and probably always will love 50?s style glamour. There’s something about the whole belted waist idea that makes me happy.   And the Stephanie Allin gown on the left is probably my current favourite gown of any I’ve seen (…and I see a LOT).

Apparently mermaid style wedding gowns are also a fifties influence, and thinking about it, one of my favourite dresses of all time is the dress Audrey Hepburn wore to the races in My Fair Lady – an extremely tight-fitting mermaid style gown.

Tea-length wedding dresses are fabulous for a more casual, less traditional wedding, especially if you have a nice pair of pins and some knock-out shoes.   Once again, the 50s influence is shining through!

Are you in touch with your inner goddess?  Grecian style wedding dresses are hot at the moment – high-waisted with floaty materials, they would make me look like a mountain, but if you’re slim and smaller breasted, it’s a style that could look stunning.

Take Back Your Wedding – 27 Unique Ideas for Weddings

Wednesday, September 29th, 2010

Today’s weddings are all about options that reflect your personalities and style. We’ve compiled a list of our favorite non-traditional or unexpected wedding ideas to incorporate into every aspect of your big day.

Ceremony Ideas

1) Location -

If you don’t host your ceremony in a house of worship or in the same location as your reception, you can get creative with your ceremony location and exchange vows at sunrise on the beach or at sunset from the rooftop of the tallest building in your metropolitan area. Get more ideas for unique ceremony sites.

2) Refreshments -
Use the season or your location as an opportunity to greet guests with a refreshing drink. Lemonade and sweet tea will quench your guests’ thirst while gathering in the blazing sun, or serve hot apple cider to warm your guests during chiller months.

3) Grand Entrance -
Make your entrance especially grand by being escorted by your pet dog or by arriving on a white horse.

4) Vows and Readings -
Not a new concept, but speaking from the heart by writing your own wedding vows or incorporating personalized poems and weddings readings into your ceremony will surely grab the attention of your guests.

Flowers & Decor Ideas

5) Color Scheme -
Try pairing a few uncommon colors together or featuring varying shades of the same color throughout your space.

6) The Food Pyramid -
Fill cylindrical glass vases with fruits and vegetables reflecting your colors. Oranges, lemons, and limes have been done so try a unique, more contemporary look with mangos or coconuts or tie it to the season with texture-rich earthy vegetables like husked corn, acorn squash, or artichokes.

7) Au Natural -
Consult Mother Nature for inspiration, and bring the outdoors in. Natural objects like stones, leaves, pinecones, even twigs can add an organic aesthetic to your reception décor. Place in rustic containers or scatter amongst pillar candles for added ambiance.

icon cool Take Back Your Wedding 27 Unique Ideas for Weddings Lighten Up -
Floating candles in a shallow bowl adds lighting and elegance to your tabletops. Or arrange multi-level candles on a mosaic of mirrors or tiles and surround them with seashells or flower petals. Placing coffee beans or red hot candies at the bottom of a vase or bowl to hold the candles steady also adds an aromatic effect.

9) Consult your Inner Child -
For the kid at heart, fill decorative bowls with your favorite candies – such as jellybeans and M&M’s – in your wedding colors.

Entertainment Ideas

10) Ceremony Music -
If “Here Comes the Bride” doesn’t suit your style or personality, choose a song that does. There is no written rule that states you can’t make your grand entrance to a rendition of your favorite Beastie Boys’ song.

11) Non-traditional Instruments -
If you desire live music over a DJ, consider tying your musician selection to the theme or location of your event. A beachside bash naturally lends itself to the sound of steel drums, while a trumpet quartet will sound impressive in an elaborate cathedral.

12) Themed Music -
Take it one step further and zone in on the music that is indigenous to your wedding location. Guests attending a Mardi Gras-themed event in New Orleans will bask in a cocktail hour of Dixieland jazz.

13) DJ and a Band -
Can’t decide which you would rather have? Have both to ensure that all types of music are represented throughout your day to please both your 85-year-old grandmother and your 21-year-old cousin.

Photography Ideas

14) Photojournalism
More and more brides are leaning toward hiring a photographer who specialized in a photojournalistic style. These photographers shy away from posed shots and aim to capture all of the candid moments that you’ll always want to remember or may have never seen.

15) Creative Shots
Hire your photographer to follow you throughout your entire day (leading up to the “Do Not Disturb” sign, of course). While it may make you feel anxious to have someone photograph you as you get ready, these shots will help you to remember the joy and anticipation of every part of your big day. Read more ideas for creativewedding pictures

Cake Ideas

16) Minimal Adornments -
Some brides believe in the “less is more” adage. A simple cake minimally ornamented can make a bold statement.

17) Square Tiers -
Looking for a subtle way to break away from the ordinary? Square tiers make a modern presentation. Whoever said “it’s hip to be square” must have been in the cake business.

18) Cake-free -
If cake isn’t your favorite dessert, then don’t feel the need to serve it to your guests. Apple crisp, peach cobbler, pumpkin pie, cupcakes, or even glazed doughnuts are a hit at the dessert table.

19) Sugar-free -
The end-of-meal offering doesn’t have to be made of flour and frosting. Think savory instead, and visit your local cheese shop to have them construct wheels of cheese in tiers and stacked to look like traditional wedding cake.

You can browse hundreds of unique and unusual wedding cakes in this cake photo gallery.

Attire Ideas

20) Wardrobe Change -
Today’s brides are opting to wear not one dress, but two! Wear an elegant gown while you exchange vows, then slip into something a little more comfortable to round out the evening.

21) Anything but White -
A white wedding dress symbolizes innocence and purity, but if that’s not your style, feel free to bring out your colorful personality by adding a splash of color to your attire. You can be as subtle as a colored sash and jewels or as bold as a fuchsia-colored dress.

22) Something Borrowed -
Anything retro screams chic these days. So why not consider donning your mother’s vintage gown as a tribute to a family legacy. A few alterations can make it your own.

Stationery Ideas -

23) Ethnicity -
If your heritage is important for you to represent on your big day, do some research and find a stationer who offers multi-cultural invitations and announcements.

24) Creative Touch -
For more intimate, casual gatherings, request the honor of your guests’ presence in an innovative and entertaining way. Here’s an idea – have your invite printed on a balloon so guests have to blow them up to receive the message.

25) Programs -
Do something a little different with your programs by including personal photos or by printing them on something that serves a dual purpose – like a fan.

26) Storybook -
Get the most bang for your program buck by including stories of how the two of you met, who introduced you, and your relationship to everyone in the bridal party. Think of all the time you’ll save by not having to explain all of this to your husband’s childhood neighbor during the reception!

Transportation Ideas

27) Grand Entrance -
If the size of your bridal party doesn’t warrant a stretch limousine, consider arriving on horseback, on the back of your husband’s motorcycle, or in the passenger’s seat of your dad’s antique car.

Best wedding souvenirs for guests

Wednesday, September 22nd, 2010

Heaven give you many, many merry days.
- William Shakespeare

In todays age there are many different items for use as wedding souvenirs or wedding favours. Having worked in the family craft/wedding business for over 10 years I have seen many weird and wonderful creations used to give to guests.

The choice is individual and no-one can say what is wrong or what is right, many people prefer to go for the traditional tulle favour which originates from italian traditions where others go for anything from ceramic peas in a pod to using different forms of candy.

Many people want to include something to remind the guest where they recieved the gift and so add some personalised ribbon or a small favour tag with their names and wedding date printed on it. Others go for something that is practical so that the guest can use it in their everyday life. Items such as bottle stoppers and openers and small jewellery boxes are currently popular but usually a little more expensive than the traditional gifts.

When choosing your wedding favours some tips are:

1. Choose something within your price range, if you have 200 guests don’t pick something that is going to cost you an arm and a leg.

2. Make sure that whatever you pick can be made in your chosen colours/design.

3. Investigate whether you can buy a D.I.Y kit? Is there someone crafty that you know who is willing to help?

4. And whatever you do! If you choose to make your own, drink the wine AFTER you have made them and not as you go along.

5. Think about whether you want something traditional, something that represents your country or heritage (e.g. Tartan) or something a bit out of the ordinary.

And remember, whatever you decide to give, it is a gift! so if the guest doesn’t like it then they can lump it.

How to pick your perfect wedding dress

Sunday, September 19th, 2010

If you ask most women what the most important thing is on their wedding day, we’d take a guess that the majority are dead set on finding that dream wedding dress to walk down the aisle in.

Women spend more time and energy looking for their dress and more thought is likely to go into this decision than any other!

wedding dress 270x400 How to pick your perfect wedding dressOf course, everyone has their own idea of what their perfect wedding dress looks like with some preferring sleek and elegant gowns and others opting for more traditional full skirted dresses and of course there are endless options of length, colour, styles and accessories to choose from as well.

A few things to remember about choosing your wedding dress is that you’ll be looking at these pictures for years to come so picking a dress with timeless elegance, rather than going with the latest fad style is probably better in the long run so your pictures will always be something you are proud to show off.

Pick a style that suits you. It’s all very well falling in love with a style of dress that looks fantastic on the hanger but shows off all of your lumps and bumps or doesn’t show off your best features. Try out a variety of styles, and take along a trusted friend or relative to help you choose a style that makes the best of all your attributes. Try everything on, sometimes a style that you think will look horrible on you will actually turn out to be the one that you fall in love with, it’s worth trying as it’s a once in a lifetime dress so you want to get it right!

The most traditional colour for wedding dresses is white and you’ll find that the majority of wedding dress stockists have most of their dresses in this colour. Of course white isn’t for everyone and you’ll be pleased to hear that many dresses are offered with other colour tones in them, resulting in many off-white colours such as ivory, cream, gold and many other hues. There are also dresses available in completely different colours so if you look good in red or blue there’s no reason why you couldn’t go for a wedding dress in those colours as well.

When you find that perfect dress, the best advice you can take is to buy it on that day, especially if it’s a dress on sale or there’s only one left in stock. There’s nothing worse than finding your dress, only to have someone else buy it while you think about it and come back a few days later to find it has been sold! You can tend to reserve dresses as well, so at the very least make sure you do this, you can always change your mind but once it’s gone – it’s gone forever! With Very.co.uk you can order the dress and try it on and of course, if it’s not the right one for you it can be returned.

Another important factor in the bride’s mind is the issue of bridesmaid dresses. Whether you’ve got one bridesmaid, or a dozen; coordinating them to wear the colour and style that you want can be tricky, especially if you have a few bridesmaids you are all different shapes and sizes.

The first thing to decide on is what colour you want, many brides will fit the bridesmaid dresses into the colour scheme, so if you’re having pink and white flowers and table centrepieces for example, it’s likely that pink will be a good colour for the bridesmaid dresses.

You could also go for a colour theme, such as purples, which include plums, lilacs and bright purple colours so you are able to find a colour that suits everyone.

Once you’ve chosen your colours, then you’ll need to find a style for your bridesmaid dresses, which again can be a little tricky if you have a few bridesmaids of differing shapes! The best thing to do is take them all to try on a variety of styles and pick out the one which is best across all of your bridesmaids.

If you’re going for block colours then you can dress up the bridesmaid dresses with accessories that match your colour scheme, such as corsages or hair pieces which fit into the scheme. This is often a nice idea if you’ve gone for plain block colours, such as cream as it brightens up the outfits and also makes the bridal party easily identifiable!

Eco Friendly Wedding Favor Ideas

Wednesday, September 15th, 2010

These eco friendly wedding favor ideas are easy on the earth and your wallet. No need to buy junk that will end up in a landfill for your wedding – and this includes wedding favors!

After all, wedding favors are generally a little token of appreciation that represents you as a couple, so if you are a “green” couple, then your favors should be too!

Twig Colored Pencils – I absolutely love these as wedding favors and place card holders too! Not only are they eco friendly wedding favors, but they are functional too. Be sure to have some recycled paper at the tables that say, “Draw a picture or write a special note to the newlyweds” and have someone collect them at the end of the night. When you read these later on, you’ll see how silly the messages get as the night goes on – and as the wine keeps pouring.

I found these natural colored twig pencil bundles from an eBay seller. To make it even cheaper I’d split them up so each guest gets just a few.

For easy tags, buy a paper punch in a shape you like (like my leaf) and punch through some recycled paper! This craft punch was found at a local craft shop several years ago.

Wedding Receptions: 15 Unique Reception Ideas

Monday, September 13th, 2010

There is no more lovely, friendly and charming relationship, communion or company than a good marriage.-Martin Luther

Want to stretch the limits and have a wedding like none other? Our inspired ideas will help you unveil your personal style for an out-of-this-world celebration.

Looking to have a wedding like none other — at least like none other you’ve ever attended? Don’t be afraid to try something new and something that’s intrinsically you. The first step is to define who you are as a couple. Investigate your likes and dislikes. Ask yourselves: What do we enjoy doing in our spare time? Which is our favorite season? Favorite artists, movies, and music? Favorite era? Once you’ve unveiled your personal style, you’re ready to take the second step and start developing a wedding-day theme.

Your theme doesn’t have to be something so complex as a Hawaiian luau, replete with a roast pig, leis, and grass skirts, but it should pinpoint an element that can be used as a thread throughout your wedding day — a color, a flower, or even a vintage brooch. You may be inspired by pink roses, a pearl-studded purse, or snowflakes (because the two of you met on the ski slopes). Or you may love sunsets so much that you host your ceremony at sundown, have wedding programs designed in shades of the sunset (from burnt orange to pale pink) and choose amber-color pin-lighting in your reception venue. Need more ideas? Here are 15 ways to craft a one-of-a-kind celebration.

1. Find the right wedding venue.

Locating the right spot to host your fun, formal affair is your greatest challenge. Having the wedding in a hotel ballroom will lend a very different tone than having it in an old weathered barn on your grandfather’s farm. Locate a distinctive venue — scout out old nightclubs, movie theaters, city roof gardens, hip restaurants, art galleries, or historic mansions. Get reception ideas in your area! Or transform the space you choose into something different by setting up screens to create different environments for dinner and dancing. You can even change the mood from one area to the next with the lighting: one room might feature white and ivory paper lanterns hanging from the ceiling while the next may be outfitted with deep red beaded lampshades on every table.

2. Develop a theme.

Finding a common chord to play through all the elements of your wedding — from your paper products to your party — will help you put on a production that’s truly unforgettable. Try a masquerade ball! Infuse your theme from the reception venue (a fancy ballroom or an old theater) to what to wear (have guests come in costumes, such as butterflies and angels) to the favors (give guests handmade masks) to the honeymoon (go to Venice during Carnevale).

3. Pick an unforgettable guest book idea.

Have a photo booth set up at the site so that your friends and family can take their own pictures or group shots. The results are a little like a home video without sound. Whether you pose properly, make funny faces, or try your best Rockette kick line, you’ll be caught on tape showing your true colors. Compiled into a visual wedding-day guest book, these are photographs that will be treasured by brides and grooms for years to come.

4. Pay attention to the decor.

The vibe of every wedding is dictated by the decor. To achieve an event that reverberates with romance, adorn your space with dozens of red roses and golden ornamentation. For casual elegance, try candles set afloat in pools, flowers floating in fish bowls, and a string quartet playing love ballads.

5. Go classic.

White-on-white is never out of style. As many people as there are looking for hot, hip new colors and coordination there are those craving the ultra-traditional. Talk to your florist about mixing shades of whites for the bouquets; use all-white linens or linens that mix various shades of white — ivory cloths with white overlays, for example; and have a white wedding cake with white rolled fondant frosting and accented with ivory sugar blossoms. Final touches: waiters dressed in tuxedos with white jackets (hello, James Bond), and, of course, a white limousine.

6. Embrace color.

Develop a visually stunning scene using monochromatic color, whether blue, violet, or kiwi green. See our favorite wedding color ideas. Consider setting up different sizes and shapes of tables (circular, square, rectangular) and use different textures or designs for the fabrics (pin-stripe fabrics on round tables and tiny polka-dot covers on square ones). Although your color palette will remain the same, each tabletop will render a distinct personality.

7. Set your tables apart.

Who says the tables must sport uniform arrangements? Think of your spread of tables as a garden, each row or corner with its own identity. Place some of your chosen blooms in tall opaque vases, float other flowers in short bowls, use others in clear vases filled with rocks and water. Accent the shorter centerpieces with tall taper candles and the taller ones with shorter votives or tea lights. Get more wedding reception table ideas.

8. Make it intimate.

If you’ve chosen a huge reception space to accommodate your massive family, make it more intimate by adding lounge furniture. If you can’t bring in couches and plush chairs to create a sitting area, try seating only four people to a table instead of eight to ten, or drape the walls and ceilings with rich velvety fabrics to close in the space.

9. Go for good lighting.

Lighting is a key (and usually forgotten) element. Okay, so there’s always candlelight or chandeliers or strung twinkle lights. But before you take an easy way out, ask if your venue has another form of lighting and use it! Find out if your venue can provide cool effects like gobo lighting to create shapes with light. Yes, it could border on cheesy if you overuse it, but initialing the white walls with your new monogram during your first dance can add an unexpected element to the occasion.

10. Give your guests a taste of the town.

Serve something regional. We know a bride who had a popular East Coast seafood soup poured at each place setting, as guests arrived in the tent. Another bride we know served sour-cream cornbread with mayhaw jelly, a local southern favorite. If you’re marrying in a city that brews its own beer, be sure to stock the bar with it or with another signature drink from your hometown.

11. Drink it up.

Espresso bars are hot and a good accessory to dessert — especially if you serve your espresso with cordials. These bars also provide a good jolt toward end of the night as the party winds down and the yawns start pouring in; plus, lattes and cappuccinos served on dainty china can be very sexy drinks.

12. Have a dessert buffet.

Bring in 20 different sweets like chocolate-covered strawberries, banana fosters, and creme brulee. Talk to your caterer for clever ways to decorate tables and present mini desserts. Your family can join in the fun — ask your best friend’s mother to make her famous brownies or your aunt to make those pecan delights. A dessert buffet encourages mingling and ensures getting people off their seats and closer to the dance floor. If you still can’t pass on the multitiered confection, box the individual cake slices and distribute as favors.

13. Go pro.

Book professional entertainers. An a cappella group or singing waiters during cocktail hour will turn on the charm. Hire a group of dancers — choose from belly dancers to Irish jig or salsa dancers — who’ll perform during courses. Bring in some different music for an hour or so, perhaps a steel drum band, a barbershop quartet, or a mariachi band.

14. Add a cigar roller to your reception.

A master cigar roller who demonstrates the art of cigar rolling will prove to be a big hit. You might ask him to display and hand out an array of rare or limited-edition cigars for guests to enjoy after dinner — do this in conjunction with a lounging area or around a martini or vodka bar for an added chic factor. Or, have him entertain guests during the cocktail hour while you two are busy taking pictures.

15. Invest in a watercolor artist.

There are wedding watercolor artists who will draw in pastels, or paint in watercolors, the reception as it unfolds. This can be a great gift for the bride and groom, but it’s also some quiet entertainment for guests and especially good for weddings set in great scenery — creating a collage of events like guests dancing outdoors on the sand and the best man’s toast by the water at a beachside bash.

Wedding Themes that Make your Wedding Unique and Memorable

Sunday, September 12th, 2010

Love comforteth like sunshine after rain.-William Shakespeare

Wedding themes are all the rage these days. This may be due to the fact that every bride wants to have a one-of-a-kind wedding that everyone would remember even after so many years. If you are planning on tying the knot anytime soon, you may want to check out these wonderful theme options.

Beach

The clear blue waters, vermillion sky, powdery white sand, and natural beach treasures all make a splendid backdrop and decoration for this special occasion. Not only that, it is also light, casual, and laid-back—something that most guests would appreciate. You can wow them even further by making a grand entrance riding a boat, a jet ski or a parasail, or by wearing a beautiful sundress in lieu of a traditional wedding gownmag glass 10x10 Wedding Themes that Make your Wedding Unique and Memorable.

You can decorate the place with tiki torches and beach lanterns as well as give away mini sailboats or starfish candles for souvenirs. Moreover, you can choose a more specific beach them such as Hawaiian, tropical, nautical, Caribbean, and so on.

Country

You can hold the wedding in a field or in a farm, and incorporate lovely country elements like quilts, lanterns, embroidered tablecloths, and candles. Make use of flowers such as daisies, sunflowers, and dahlias for the table centerpieces. Play country music during the wedding reception and you may even have a square dance to complete the event.

Vintage

Another wonderful theme option would be vintage, which could be anything from the classical 1940’s to the retro 1970’s to the new wave of the 1980’s. This nostalgic theme would transport everyone back in time. Be sure to dress the part and incorporate all the elements of the era you have chosen to make the event perfect.

Fantasy / Fairy Tale

Most brides want to feel like a princess on this special occasion, so why not hold a fantasy or fairy tale wedding theme to turn that dream into a reality? Make a stunning entry by a riding a horse-drawn carriage. Turn the flower girls into dreamy fairies. Cast a spell on the guests by holding the reception inside a castle.

Holiday

Customarily, couples hold weddingsmag glass 10x10 Wedding Themes that Make your Wedding Unique and Memorable during Valentine’s Day or Christmas but if you want your wedding to be extraordinary, you can have a Halloween theme instead and ask your guests to come in spooky costumes. Hold the event in a scary haunted house and play macabre music throughout the event. If spooky is not your thing, you can also go for other holidays like St. Patrick’s Day or April Fool’s Day.

Sports

For sports fanatic couples, have this kind of wedding theme based on your favorite sport. For example, if you like golf so much, hold the event in a golf course. Give away miniature golf sets to the guests. Top the cake with a bride and groom swinging a golf club. Send out invitations that say, “It’s Par-Tee Time!”

Eco-Chic

Green weddings like eco-chic themes are majestic and at the same time, meaningful. If you want to express your environmental advocacy, one of the best ways to do it is through an eco-friendly wedding, wherein you would aim to reduce energy consumption and waste, and recycle various kinds of materials during the whole planning, preparation, and during the event itself.

Culture

Choose whatever cultural theme is closest to your heart. For example, if you come from Irish descent, a Celtic wedding would be fitting. If you are fond of Asian culture, you can have an Asian themed wedding.

Having a wedding theme not only makes the event unique and memorable, it also helps in the planning and preparation. It makes things easier for you by helping you narrow down the choices on venues, wedding supplies, and everything you need for the wedding. Just be sure to choose a theme that would best reflect you and your beau’s personal interests and personalities.
